I'll be taking a break from updating my blogs on LiveJournal and Blogspot for a while. I've been busy trying to maintain my personal site, which now houses my blogs as well, so I would appreciate it greatly if you would visit that instead.
It's a little troublesome for me to maintain my blogs on 3 separate sites, even for a geek ;) Anyway, please update your bookmarks and I hope to see you soon on my new site:
Trapper's Hideout
Hopefully I've made it user-friendly enough, but since everyone can comment, feel free to drop me a note and let me know how I can improve the site. See you around...
This blog has moved to http://www.callantham.org/
Blogger has treated me well, but it is time to move on. I have setup my new blog over at callantham.org, and I hope you can join me there, and move your bookmarks over to the new site.
I'd like to take this chance to thank all of you loyal readers: Thank you for reading :) (Yes, all six of you :P)

Back to work...
Though I just got off shift yesterday, I'll be going back to the office again to cover for a colleague.
The good things are that I still have a load of stuff to do, so I don't mind going back, and that my weekends are still intact. The bad thing is I wonder if my brains are awake enough to make a difference...and that I'll miss "24" tonight. Crap. Forgot about that.
Guess we'll know tonight. Oh well. Back to bed, or I might as well not be there tonight.
[...on trapper.homelinux.org...]
On another note, I still haven't gotten anyone to vote on the poll, on to comment on the stories...except for Arn of course :) And since you can vote anonymously, why not just drop one? Or a comment just to say hi? I won't bite, I promise :P

What Keeps You Off/On Windows?
Every self-respecting geek has a favourite operating system, and this one is no exception. My personal favourite, if you haven't realized by now, is Linux. Gamers almost by default use Windows, and I know a lot of media people who swears by their Macs.
Being a Linux user, a very common question among people I speak to is "Why do you use Linux and not Windows?", followed by "What keeps you off Windows?". Although it's more like what turns me off, I believe it is a question that is worth answering.
There were a couple of discussions on Slashdot recently, titled "What's Keeping You On Windows?" and "What Keeps You Off of Windows?" respectively. As is typical on Slashdot, the noise-to-signal ratio can be pretty high, but there are good and valid points made in the postings, and I would recommend you check it out.
Personally though, I completely agree with this post. I am a firm believer of open source software, not just because most of it is gratis, or just because I like control down to the smallest detail.
I use open source software because of the choices it gives me. Because I am not curtailed in my freedom to use the software. Because the choice is mine. That's right, mine, and mine alone. It can't get much better than that.
This is a good topic for discussion, so please feel free to post comments.

The Hideout is up!
Finally managed to iron out most of the problems with my home-brewed and -hosted website, at least sufficiently enough to put it up for public viewing. Just point your browsers to trapper.homelinux.org, and enjoy!
I've made it a very graphics-unintensive site, so do not fear even if you're on a dial-up line! Although I would recommend you just get an upgrade since prices have been dropping to very affordable levels...
Also, I have to thank my bro Melvyn for helping me iron out some of the user registration problems on the site. Drop by and tell me what you think.

Psychosis and Psychology Tests
Based on my own experience, the only ones suffering from "the poor economy" seems to be me and me alone. I got home nice and early this morning and decided to get some decent sleep for the long haul tonight, and right at about 1230 hrs my neighbour upstairs started drilling.
Again.
What is it with the "poor economy" again? It's definitely not poor if you can fucking afford renovation every other month. And why can't they do everything at one go instead to spreading my torment over a few months? Why? Do these people get a real high by doing that?
Forget it; the main reason I wanted to blog is because I ran across this interesting "Thinker Test" site hosted by the BBC. I know you will not be able to resist clicking on the link. Go on now, take the test, you've got nothing to lose but your mind...
According to that test I'm an "Interpersonal Thinker". Is it accurate? You tell me :)

Almost there...
I'm almost done with my webserver configuration; just have a few remaining bits to finish before putting it up for public testing. One of those bits is configuring a working MTA (Mail Transport Agent) so it can send mail out. Haven't decided which one I'm gonna use yet, so I guess that's what my next period of days off will go into.
Also need to configure the upload/download section; apparently PostNuke doesn't support it natively, so I need to hunt down a third-party module to enable that. If I can get that up and working, then I don't need to put an FTP server in there.
(You have to keep in mind all this is running on a Pentium II, hence the prudence on extra software.)
Alright, gotta run now. Updates as it happens, and if I can keep up.

Quality Time and PostNuke
Spent yesterday relaxing with Karen, and I must admit that it felt like a long time ago that we did absolutely nothing but enjoy each other's company. Hopefully we can do this on a more regular basis, as spending time together is vital in any romantic relationship.
Spent today doing nothing as well, in preparation for the upcoming shift tomorrow night. Well, I didn't do anything of note that is; played some games, watched a little TV, cleared a pile of mails, and tried to get my webserver tuned. Nothing stressful :)
Speaking of my webserver, it turned out that I wasn't the only one suffering from some non-working components, and the only solution is to downgrade to a working version of PostNuke.
Downgrade.
Not exactly a confidence-booster, but a workaround nonetheless. I'm re-installing Apache and PostNuke as I type this, so hopefully I can configure the site to my taste quickly and let you lot have a look. Wish me luck.

Appointments and TROY!
Went out the whole day yesterday and met up with some friends. I realize this has been a recurring theme through my blogs, as we go on in life our available time tends to get shorter and shorter till we suddenly lost contact with all our friends. Don't let it happen to you.
Met up with Melvyn and Orlando for a quick lunch at Maxwell Market. Orlando recently bought a car, an older make Toyota Corolla, which is actually of a very affordable price. As he always says, whenever we commit to a big purchase like that, we must do our sums very, very carefully, and never spend more than what we need or can.
During lunch, as we had to share a table with two other people, we had a quick chat with them as well. One question that took me by surprise was when the lady asked me "Are you in advertising?". Both Mel and Orlando will never let me hear the end of this. It's probably because of my long hair and my blue dye print shirt. Dang. She was actually very surprised to hear I'm in IT security.
Must've been my long hair and my blue dye print shirt. Dang.
Melvyn and I hung around Shaw Tower after that, and watched Troy while we were there. That movie is worth your money, so if you haven't, go and watch it. And after you watch it, view the comic strip here, courtesy of the great Penny Arcade. All hail Gabe and Tycho!
Note: If you didn't get the joke from the strip, drop me a note and I'll tell you, you sad creature.
I'm probably gonna catch Troy again later today, as Karen wants to watch it. And I don't mind at all; those combat scenes are mighty impressive, and the acting is better than you'd expect. And Hector would so kick Maximus' ass. Achilles would probably rip Maximus' head right-off, with his bare-hands.
Another Note: Maximus is the title character from the movie "Gladiator". That movie is not even fit to eat the dust left behind by Troy. IMNSHO.
Also had a catching up session with Jianye and his lady in the evening, where we gorged ourselves silly at Siam Kitchen. Everyone felt, and probably was, bloated by the end of it, another sign of age catching up. Apparently, the two of them are applying for a flat near where my new flat is, so we're gonna be neighbours! w00t! This will be interesting.
And now for the tech news. And no, there is no escape from this. Never. Ahem.
I've installed PostNuke and MySQL on my Pentium II box, which I had christened Auron. (Why that name? It's old, but it's still chugging along, dammit.) And actually got pretty far with configuring the look and feel to what I want. But unfortunately, the Web Links section doesn't quite work yet, so I'll have to delay public testing for now. So if anyone of you are PostNuke gurus and can spare a few minutes helping me out, drop me a comment or IM.
That's all the news for now. Think I'll go play a bit of Xenosaga before Karen arrives...
